You have not mentioned which phone you are using right now, if its nseries phone, you can try to install Nokia OVI Suite on your pc, btw, you can have Standard PC Suite also for sending messages from your pc. If you want to prevent the automatic startup, go to the File menu in the PC Suite main window and deselect the Invoke at startup option.
What i don't want is the 'Get Connected Wizard' to appear at all. It's clearly a glitch of some kind, because PC Suite already recognises my phone, so why is it asking me to connect it again?
